Review D-Link DNS-323

Though quite old, D-Link DNS-323 has a feature that is still reliable today.

NAS D-Link DNS-323 is actually not a new NAS products. NAS is actually been circulating for some time. But with prices that are affordable and feature a pretty, feels this NAS can still compete with the new NAS-NAS on the market today. What features are offered? How is performance? Check out our reviews below.

D-Link DNS-323 is a network attached storage (NAS) which has a size that is not too large. NAS has dimensions of 10.1 x 19.8 x 12.7 cm. NAS has the appearance of a fairly simple but handsome look thanks to black color in all its parts. The material used is also quite good in the form of aluminum is quite thick.

On the front there is a plastic cap that covers the hard drive space. When the plastic lid is opened, there is a small hidden button which is the power button. This button is placed inside that are not easily moved by accident. But that means you have to unscrew the plastic prior to turning on or off this NAS. Above these buttons, there are two blue LED lights.

NAS D-Link DNS-323 is able to accommodate a maximum of two hard drives. Drive bays on the NAS is not equipped with rails and lock it was rather difficult for users to install the hard drive and confirm it is securely attached. When you first use it, we had experienced difficulties because one of the hard drive is not plugged in securely.

Looking to the back, D-Link DNS-323 has one small fan to help remove heat. Then there are two plastic levers that are useful to help remove the hard drive addition there is a USB port and one LAN port that supports gigabit connections.

D-Link DNS-323 is able to accommodate two hard drives with a maximum capacity of up to 1 TB per disk (total 2 TB). That number still seems big enough for now. Configuring the hard drive that can be done is JBOD, RAID0 and RAID1. D-Link DNS-323 has a default application that is useful to help perform the initial configuration of this NAS. Further configuration can be done through a web control panel.

When accessed via a web control panel and login, the first D-Link DNS-323 will detect the hard drive for you and offer to be doing prosews formats as well as configure the hard disk to be used. You can memlih configuration RAID0, RAID1, and JBOD. If you want to configure it first, you may have to enter Skip to the main control panel.

The main page of control panel consists of several menu located on the right and up. You can set the network settings such as the NAS IP address, DHCP server, and others. In addition you can also create folders for each user and set the quota save each folder. Also available other features such as FTP server, iTunes server, and BitTorrent.

Then what about performance? To determine its performance, we tried to do the test with two Western Digital hard drive and test its speed on each configuration.

NAS is relatively fast during the format in any configuration, either JBOD, RAID0 or RAID1. NAS has only one choice of file system, that is EXT2. Regarding speed, the D-Link DNS-323 is quite normal, even tend to be slow. Read and write speeds generated by the NAS is in the range of 15 MB / s to 26 MB / s.

D-Link DNS-323 NAS that this is not the fastest. However, to meet the needs of small-scale home or office, the NAS is still reliable. The price is affordable. If you frequently transfer data in large size and require quick access, you should glance at the other NAS.
